Phase 2: Ensuring Muscle Control and Strength Necessary for the Activities of Daily Living

In this phase, in scapular muscle training, muscle control and co-contractions or muscle strength should be focused [28].

It would be beneficial to begin scapular co-contraction training with simple movements and to move gradually to harder exercises. In open and closed kinetic chain exercises, exercises done with or without weight bearing may be used for this purpose.

In their electromyographic study, Kibler et al. [29] defined exercises that can be used at the earlier stages of shoulder rehabilitation. “Low row”, “inferior glide” (Fig. 18.11), “lawnmover” (Fig. 18.12a, b), and “robbery” (Fig. 18.13a, b) exercises can be utilized to increase the activation of scapula stabilizer muscles during early rehabilitation phase.
